SELECTING A BARREL HORSE
When selecting a young horse for a future barrel horse prospect, how many barrel racers do not have a set criteria. Too often the selecton is make with out regard or sturdy of barrel horse breeding. Have you just purchased the best bred cow horse or race horse in the country? Are you hoping that he might just take to the barrels with enough speed and athletic ability to get a check? Don't forget it takes a lot of time and hard work, not to mention money. Only to have your prospect fall apart in the first go round.
The biggest factor is breeding. "Is this horse bred to be a barrel horse?" A barrel horse needs speed and athletic ability with the desire and try to put it all together. He needs to move through that cloverleaf pattern with the quickness of a deer. He needs the right personality to be able to take the pressure of run after run so that you can consistently go to the pay window. Also, the right attitude can make a horse easier to train. And, last but not least, is this horse pretty to look at, conformation to stay sound (short back, long underline, low hocks, balance, ect.) The only insurance that a prospect will be able to do any of this is in his pedigree. I mean, has any of this horse's relatives won at barrel racing, is he bred to be a barrel horse?

'OTRO FRACASO' Has proven to be a sire of Winners. To his credit is "FIRE WATER SLIDIN', ( multiple futurity champion and 2009 reserve WPRA futurity horse for the nation) and "OTRO SONADOR' (2010 BRN4D futurity champion). And for the 2011 futurities and other barrel races, Sippin Diesel and Red Horses Can't Jump are showing great promise. She was just the Champion of the California Dreamin Futurity!
Fire Water Sliddin just won the Side Winder Fututity Championship at The Spring Run Classic.
Winning the average by over 3 tenths. She also won $1900 at the Greg Olson Memorial Barrel Futurity in January.

"Quick" has been easy to do everything with. Lance started riding her in March of 2010. Just watch how good she is going. No bad habits. She is a beautiful red dun, and should mature at 15.2 hands.
